Super Debut: 'Man of Steel' Performs Box Office Heroics

For a guy who just turned 75 years old, Superman proved this weekend that he still has a lot of life left in him, as the epic new superhero blockbuster "Man of Steel" set a new all-time record for the biggest opening weekend in June history with an estimated $113 million.

With Thursday previews added in, "Man of Steel's" total rises to an impressive $125.1 million.

By comparison, the last attempt to revive Superman, 2006's "Superman Returns," brought in $84.6 in its debut. But that figure was inflated due to a Wednesday opening, not to mention the fact that it premiered over the Fourth of July weekend, which is traditionally one of the biggest moviegoing weekends of the year.

It's safe to say, then, that "Man of Steel" is an unqualified success. And it seems fans are completely ignoring critics, who gave the film a decidedly mediocre 56% rating, as moviegoers assigned "Man of Steel" an A- Cinemascore, which should mean strong word of mouth and a good hold next weekend.

Of course, next weekend "Man of Steel" will also have to contend with Brad Pitt's new zombie apocalypse "World War Z," which could put a wrinkle in Superman's cape. By comparison, the biggest competition this weekend was the release of the ensemble comedy "This Is the End," which proved to be an excellent bit of counter-programming to the tune of $32.6 million (including Wednesday and Thursday numbers). As a result, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and the gang have already earned back the film's production costs.

Which is pretty good. Just not, you know... Super.
