On his blog, Wood revealed that a television version of "DMZ" has been in the works for a little while now, but the deal has apparently fallen through.

"We also had a near miss with setting DMZ up as a television show, at a verrrry respectable network, and its a bit crushing," Wood wrote on his blog. "I had hoped the whole new 'DC Entertainment' meant they’d be better about this sort of thing… and this deal seemed like a gift from heaven… but apparently not."

For those of you unfamiliar with the project, "DMZ" is set in a world where a second civil war has broken out between two different sects: the United States of America and the Free States. The island of Manhattan serves as a demilitarized zone between the two sides, with journalist Matty Roth caught right in the middle of it all.

While it doesn't sound like the show is going forward — not in its most recently proposed incarnation, at least — now seems as good a time as any to revisit Warren Ellis' own idea for a "DMZ" adaptation. While serving as Splash Page's guest editor in the lead-up to last fall's adaptation of "Red," Ellis offered the following idea: "I'd be interested to see Nicolas Winding Refn, director of the demented Viking movie 'Valhalla Rising,' do an adaptation of Brian's 'DMZ' graphic novels, because I think he'd make that book's broken and bombed-out Manhattan a very alienating and alienated place."
