Laughing, Acting Or Singing, Jessica Simpson Aims To Entertain And Inspire

'Employee of the Month' star loves comedies and comedians, but music remains her 'soul.'

She might have shed her Daisy Dukes for a name tag and store apron in "Employee of the Month," but Jessica Simpson is still right where she wants to be in her acting career -- namely, making people laugh. MTV News' Yasmine Richard spoke with her about her latest movie, her music and how much of her personal life fans can expect to hear about on her upcoming album.

MTV: Let's start off with your upcoming movie. What's "Employee of the Month" about?

Jessica Simpson: In the film there's a rumor going around that Amy, the girl I play in the movie, only dates her store's Employee of the Month. So the whole plot is about these two guys [Dane Cook and Dax Shepard] who have worked at the store for 10 years and basically, throughout the whole movie, they're trying to win my heart by becoming the next Employee of the Month.

MTV: Were you excited about this role and being in this movie?

Simpson: The first time I read the script I fell in love with it. I read about 15 pages of it, and I just said, "I'm in, this is what I want to do." I wanted to be a part of an ensemble cast again, like I was for "Dukes." That way I didn't have the pressure of the whole movie on my shoulders. Plus it's a good way to learn; it's like an acting class every day. I get to work with really amazing, talented people and we just laugh the whole time.

Working Out The Hijinks

Jessica has lots of laughs with Dane Cook in 'Employee of the Month' -- and big ears to boot. Watch these interviews and an exclusive clip.

MTV: So tell me about your co-stars.

Simpson: I really don't think that I could ask for a better situation, especially when you have to stay up all night long. We have to start at, like, 6 p.m. and have to stay until 8 a.m. and we shoot all through the night. So it's nice to have comedians who keep you on your toes and keep you laughing till you pee your pants.

I think people are really going to enjoy this movie, because it's one of those films that you can just go to the theater, eat your popcorn and know you're going to be laughing the whole time. Belly laughing. It's from the producers of "Wedding Crashers," and I remember going to see that movie and just laughing uncontrollably, and I think that with all the personalities in this movie we [have the same sort of thing going on].

MTV: Do you have any other movie projects that you're working on?

Simpson: I'm really selective when it comes to choosing my movies because acting is a new career for me and I really want the longevity, and I want to make smart decisions. So there's some stuff in the works, some scripts that I really love, but it's gonna have to be a project that I relate to and want people to see me in. Something that I'm comfortable with. But I don't know what that is yet.

MTV: Is music still the most important thing to you?

Simpson: Music is my soul. Whenever I want to express myself, I'm either writing or singing. I can't imagine not having music as part of my life.

MTV: And you're working with Jimmy Jam?

Simpson: I've been working with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. We've done about seven songs together and they are angels. They're amazing, and so talented that you are just in awe sitting next to them and being able to write with them. And then Janet Jackson is down the hall -- I absolutely adore her and she is such a sweetheart. Jimmy and Terry have a great vibe and they're so professional, and we've had a great time working together.

MTV: Is your album going to express what you've been going through in your life?

Simpson: Well, you can't help but tell a story about your life. It comes naturally through music, through instrumentation, so you will, with this next record, see a lot of things I've been going through. And if that can offer any inspiration to anybody going through any of the same situations, then so be it. That's why I'm here.
