Lupita Nyong'o Channels The Oscar Statuette On The Cover Of 'Vanity Fair'

Does Vanity Fair know something we don't? Or did they just, like, happen to think, almost exactly one month before the Academy Awards, that a long, slinky gold dress was the perfect choice for our new favorite "It" Girl, Lupita Nyong'o? To be fair, we've yet to see something that doesn't look good on Nyong'o, but this dress is kind of suspiciously foreshadowing, considering the season (awards, not winter).

Yesterday, VF released a sneak peek (and by "sneak peek," it appears they mean the entire three-page pull-out) of their 20th annual Hollywood Issue cover, which was shot by famed photog Annie Leibovitz and "celebrates a year of spectacular film with a group of distinguished actors." Despite the fact that Lupita didn't make the front fold, we certainly think she's the center of attention.

Given the circumstances, we can't help drawing comparisons between the 30-year-old Kenyan actress and the highly-lauded Oscar statuette. Nyong'o is nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (for 12 Years a Slave) this year, and her square-neck, body-conscious gold gown appears to be intricately handwoven. Kind of like Sleeping Beauty when she pricked her finger on a spindle, but with actual strands of gold. IDK how real spindles work, but if gold can be strung, it was totally strung for Lupita. Also, #abs. That's at least a six-pack she's sporting, right?

Nyong'o joins an impressive roster of Hollywood stars on the Vanity Fair cover, holding her own among a diverse collection of actors—from front-cover mainstays like Julia Roberts and George Clooney, to newcomers like Brie Larson and Margot Robbie. Whether or not their placement and styling choice was intentional, there's no question that Lupita is the standout star, both on the cover and in this year's big-screen flicks. You can check out the full spread of Vanity Fair's Hollywood Issue on February 11th.
