'Police Academy' Is Coming Back With Original Producer Paul Maslansky
It's true. And it's awesome. I can't speak for you readers, but I grew up watching those movies. And sure, the world might have been a better place without "Mission to Moscow," the seventh movie in the series. The short-lived TV show too. But those first six are comedy gold. "The Simpsons" once posited the idea that the Stonecutters made Steve Guttenberg a star. Not true. "Police Academy" did.
The news today is that original producer Paul Maslansky -- a name forever burned into my brain after seeing it pop up in credits sequences countless times -- is bringing his long-lost series back Variety reports. There's no script yet. No director, no writer. But there's hope. And as "Shawshank Redemption" taught us: "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."
"It's going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV," Maslansky said. "It's going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It'll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we'll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme."
The only thing I don't like there is the shadow of a doubt Maslansky casts on bringing back the classic "Police Academy" theme. If that movie hits theaters with a 21st century remix, the bits of my childhood already killed off by other craptacular remakes will rise up as zombies to consume the rest of my memories of those carefree days.
New Line, which is also shepherding a return to the classic "Vacation" series, will take "Academy" as well. There's no word on the tone of this new movie, but here's hoping it falls closer to the first few in the series -- which featured plenty of sex and drugs -- as opposed to the later, lighter offerings. Which isn't to say that "Citizens on Patrol" was bad.
There's also no word on which members of the original cast, if any, will return.
Can the world handle another "Police Academy" movie? Which original cast members should return? Who should be a part of the new class?
