Everlast To Open Second Leg Of Santana's Supernatural Tour

Santana plans time off after sweep of Southern and Western U.S.

Folk-rapper Everlast will join veteran rock guitarist Carlos Santana and his namesake band on the second leg of their U.S. tour, after which Santana will take a break before working on a new album.

"I have a lot of songs, but it's, like, about three separate menus, and right now, the only thing I'm hungry for is to be around my wife and my kids," Santana said. "So, I'm gonna stop in October and just be around for five to seven months, and don't work with anyone or anything, just be daddy, husband, that's it."

Santana, long known as one of the strongest live acts in rock, are touring in support of Supernatural. The 1999 album garnered nine Grammy Awards and two #1 singles and has sold more than 14 million copies worldwide since its release nearly a year ago.

Everlast contributed "Put Your Lights On" (RealAudio excerpt) — a song inspired by his near-death experience from a heart attack — to the album. A video for the tune was released Monday.

Supernatural features other genre-breaking guest collaborators, including hip-hop songstress Lauryn Hill and Goodie MOb vocalist Cee-Lo on "Do You Like the Way," acoustic guitar bandleader Dave Matthews on "Love of My Life," and fellow rock guitar veteran Eric Clapton on "The Calling" (RealAudio excerpt).

The ubiquitous "Smooth," with Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas, and "Maria Maria," with soulful singing duo the Product G&B, have been the album's two consecutive #1 hits.

While the album was seen by many as a comeback for Santana, the bulk of whose top-10 hits struck nearly three decades ago, Thomas said that just isn't so.

"I hate it when people use the word 'comeback,' because with Carlos Santana — all the stuff he did with Stanley Clarke and all his jazz stuff, it's just amazing," Thomas said. "Some of the bootlegs you can get from the jazz festival, it's like him and Miles [Davis]. F---! That's amazing stuff. So where did he go? He didn't go anywhere. Everybody else was just somewhere else. Finally, he's here now, so they can see it."

Funky soul singer Macy Gray will open on the first leg of the tour, which runs from July 20 in West Palm Beach, Fla., through Aug. 22 in Minneapolis.

The second leg starts Sept. 28 in Englewood, Colo., and runs through Oct. 26, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
