'Smallville' Exec 'Very Optimistic' That Allison Mack Will Return Next Season

According to Entertainment Weekly, contract negotiations with Mack are already well underway. "Smallville" executive producer Brian Peterson has also said that he is “very optimistic” that Mack will remain with the series. “We’ve learned the hard way not to say [it's official] until everything is signed and dotted," added Peterson. "So the best we can say is we’re really optimistic. And so is Allison.”

Mack is the only original cast member who has stayed with "Smallville" throughout the entire nine-season run besides Tom Welling, who portrays Clark Kent.

Back in March, word emerged that one of the main characters from "Smallville" would be killed off in the season finale — which will also resolve the long-running Zod and Kandorian storyline. If Chloe can now be considered "safe," then Zod (Callum Blue) and Tess Mercer (Cassidy Freeman) are the most likely to be expendable in the finale.

The season finale will also feature the return of Black Canary (Alaina Huffman) and Cyborg (Lee Thompson Young) as well as Hawkman (Michael Shanks) and Stargirl (Britt Irvin) from the Justice Society — which was introduced earlier this year in a two-part episode by comic scribe Geoff Johns.

The ninth season finale of "Smallville" will air on May 14. The series will return for its tenth season in the fall.
