15 Life Lessons You Forgot You Learned From Taylor Swift's 'Fifteen'
On August 30, 2009, the world was introduced to the most accurate song about freshman year jitters ever -- "Fifteen" by Taylor Swift, the fourth single off her second album, Fearless. Let's take a walk down memory lane, shall we?
From start to finish, the song is just so damn accurate about the whole nerve-wracking high school experience. Even Tumblr agrees:
Whether you were still in middle school or well past the high school glory days nightmare when the song first dropped, T. Swift's "Fifteen" resonated with many of us. Here's what we learned from the emotional country-pop tune:
Take a lot of deep breaths
It doesn't matter if you're 15 or 50. Life is a wonderful hot mess of worries, self-doubt, small miracles and priceless moments. Take that breath, count to 10, take it in, RELAX. Exhale the bad stuff and keep the good.
Fifteen is rough, man
Between starting the big bad world of high school and dealing with the aftereffects of puberty's raging hormones, age 15 is hardly a walk in the park. Unfortunately 16 ain't so sweet, either.
Say hi to your friends you ain't seen in a while
Stay in touch with the people you want in your life.
Befriend redheads
They're awesome. They're doubly awesome if they're also named Abigail.
The boys are ???
Swooooooooon.
Let yourself feel giddy about someone...
That magical feeling like you're flying and dancing around your room when the night ends? Those moments don't come around often. Even if things don't work out in the end, the memories stay with you.
...but look before you fall
Don't get so swept up in their awesomeness that you're blind to relationship red flags.
Your first kiss will make your head spin 'round
Even if you aren't exactly 15 when the big smooch happens, it'll still leave you freaking out about how awesome (or awkward) it was.
You're not gonna marry the first person you date
OK, maybe you will, but you probably won't. Especially if you're 15 when you start dating them.
Football players aren't hot sh-t
After high school, nobody really cares what sport you played or if you have an athletic bone in your body at all.
Dream big
Boy or no boy, you've got bigger things to do with your life than wait for a phone call, text or a carrier pigeon from your crush, ex or Tinder flame. ✌ out!
There will be tears
Maybe you, like Abigail, give everything you have -- emotionally or, uh, physically -- to someone who changes their mind. Or maybe some other upsetting thing happens in your life. It's more than OK to grab some tissues and a friend's shoulder for a good cry.
You can't go back in time...
There's no point dwelling on "what ifs." You're only torturing yourself in the process.
...but time is the best medicine
Remember those deep breaths? Keep taking those while you wait for time to pass.
It's OK if you don't know who you're supposed to be
At 15 or at any age, really. Everyone's winging it just like you. Don't worry.
