Cole Sprouse’s New CW Show 'Riverdale' Officially Has A Premiere Date

Here’s when your favorite CW shows return in 2017

The CW has officially set a midseason premiere date for the anticipated new drama Riverdale. Described as a bold and subversive take on Archie Comics, the noir series — starring K.J. Apa and Cole Sprouse as beloved characters Archie and Jughead, respectively — will debut Thursday, January 26 at 9 p.m. ET, pushing Supernatural to Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET. Tonally, Riverdale and Supernatural are a perfect match for Thursday nights.

Following the premiere of Riverdale, Archie Comics will release a special one-shot written by showrunner and Afterlife With Archie writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The comic, which hits shelves February 1, will explore the events leading up to the Riverdale premiere. The current plan is that the one-shot will kick off an entire series of comics based on the CW show.

The CW

Riverdale may be based on a comic, but there aren't any superheroes or vampires (not yet, anyway) running amok in this sleepy town. On Greg Berlanti's Riverdale, Archie Andrews and his friends at Riverdale High are connected by the common struggles of adolescence — oh, and the mysterious death of their friend Jason Blossom. There's always something. It's essentially Twin Peaks meets Gossip Girl, starring a Sprouse twin, Luke Perry, and a cast of painfully pretty CW stars.

The network also announced the returns of genre favorites The 100 (February 1 at 9 p.m. ET), iZombie (April 4 at 8 p.m. ET), Reign (February 10 at 9 p.m ET), and The Originals (March 17 at 8 p.m. ET), as well as the series finale date for its long-running drama The Vampire Diaries (March 10 at 8 p.m. ET).
