Erykah Badu Traces Her Roots To The Roots; Rahzel Joined By De La Soul, Q-Tip For Solo Debut

It's been almost a year and a half since Erykah Badu released her last record, the "Live" concert album, but the R&B singer has guested on tracks for the Outkast as well as the Roots, whose new hit single, You Got Me," features Badu's lilting harmonies.

According to Badu, the collaboration between her and the Roots is no real surprise, as she and the band have known each other since before Badu had a record deal and both acts were working the club circuit.

"In the underground circuit," Badu explained to the MTV Radio Network, "what we do as hip-hop artists is that we keep each other going by supporting the DJs. Because the DJs spin the records, and the Roots were one of the best underground hip-hop acts [to mix DJs] with live music."

As for the Roots, member Rahzel the Godfather of Noyze has just released "All I Know" as the first single from his forthcoming solo effort, "The Fifth Element: Make The Music 2000."

Rahzel's record is due out on May 11 and will include appearances

from the rest of the Roots, De La Soul, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Pete Rock, A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip, Branford Marsalis and Aaron Hall.
