Former Verve singer Richard Ashcroft will release his debut solo single, "A Song for the Lovers," on April 3, according to a source at Virgin Records in the UK. The UK single will be backed by the new songs "(Could Be) A Country Thing, City Thing, Blues Thing" and "Precious Stone." No commercial U.S. single is planned, although "A Song for the Lovers" is scheduled to debut on U.S. radio in late March, the source said. Ashcroft's still-untitled first solo album is slated for a June release, with another single expected before then. The first single was co-produced by Ashcroft and Chris Potter, who also helped produce the Verve's breakthrough 1997 album, Urban Hymns. The psychedelia-influenced rock band broke up in April 1999 following a tumultuous nine-year run, just after scoring their biggest hit with "Bitter Sweet Symphony."
