Guided by Voices will start the new year in much the same fashion they ended the previous one: on the road.
The lo-fi rockers will start an 11-date U.S. tour beginning Jan. 13 at the TLA club in Philadelphia and will end up Jan. 26 at the Cow Haus in Tallahassee, Fla., according to TVT Records spokesperson Carleen Donovan.
Canadian pop group Sloan will open on the outing's first three dates, while rockers the American Flag will perform for all of the shows. More dates are expected to be scheduled before year's end, Donovan said.
Robert Pollard, leader of the prolific Dayton, Ohio, group, has been especially active in the latter half of the year, releasing several solo albums in the "Fading Captain" series. The latest was Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department, a collaboration with current GBV guitarist Doug Gillard, which was released in early November.
The album was preceded by May's Ask Them, credited to Lexo & the Leapers, and March's Kid Marine, which featured such scratchy, poetic home recordings as "Submarine Teams" (RealAudio excerpt).
Guided by Voices also have been performing a variety of songs from their most recent studio album, Do the Collapse, produced by former Cars leader Ric Ocasek and released in August. The album, more polished than most of the group's previous efforts, features such tunes as "Picture Me Big Time" (RealAudio excerpt) and the single "Teenage FBI" (RealAudio excerpt).
Guided by Voices made their name in the mid-'90s with the scratchily recorded power-pop albums Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes, as well as a barrage of non-album singles and EPs.
