Lo Fidelity Allstars To Bring Big Beat Back To States
The Lo Fidelity Allstars, the British techno-rock group that gained
an audience in the United States with the hit "Battle Flag," will
return to the U.S. next week to begin a monthlong tour, Columbia
Records announced.
The group will share the bill with noted American techno-rocker Moby
for six dates, including the first five shows of the tour, which
begins Nov. 24 at the Vanderbilt in Garden City, N.J. The group also
will play several radio station–sponsored shows with Run-D.M.C., Bush, Ben Harper and other artists.
The trek comes as the Allstars prepare to release the remix album
On the Floor at the Boutique. The album features recordings
made at dance parties in Britain with group turntablist Albino Priest
at the helm.
The group was one of several acts, with the Chemical Brothers and
Fatboy Slim, to popularize the dance genre known as big beat in the U.S.
The style uses classic-rock, pop, reggae and hip-hop samples to
craft original songs. How to Operate With a Blown Mind includes several songs with three or more samples and live bass, guitar, drum and vocals.
During the group's U.S. tour in March, the 27-year-old Albino Priest
(born Phil Ward) said that the pop leanings of such songs as the top-20
modern-rock hit "Battle Flag" (RealAudio
excerpt) and "Lazer Sheep Dip Funk" (RealAudio
excerpt), and the response they generated, were purely accidental.
"There was no big plan to sound like anything but a dance record," he said. "We're quite surprised by people's reaction to the album. We were shocked by how well they took to it. But this is the kind of album we would buy if we weren't in the band."
