WOMAD Festivals Planned for '99

The world-music organization WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance), founded by art-rocker Peter Gabriel in 1982, is planning festivals on five continents in 1999. The group has confirmed events in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, England and the United States, and it also plans to hold an event somewhere in Asia. The first-ever South African WOMAD festival, slated for Feb. 12-14 in Greater Benoni, will feature South African songwriter Johnny Clegg along with performers from Russia, Tibet, China, Cuba and other countries.
