The 2008 found-footage monster movie "Cloverfield" changed the game. The Matt Reeves-directed, Drew Goddard-written film was a fan favorite offering enduring visuals like the Statue of Liberty losing her head, as well as a relatable plot line of friends trying to stick together and save who they can while also avoiding, you know, a giant monster.

Rumors have swirled for years about a repeat performance, with Goddard earmarked on IMDb as attached to write a second script.

So is it true?

MTV News, chatting with Goddard at Toronto International Film Festival where he was promoting "The Martian," went straight to the source to get the scoop.

"I don’t know that that’s going to happen," Goddard said. "We’d all like it to. I think [director] Matt [Reeves] and [producer] J.J. [Abrams] and I all feel like we don’t want to do it just to do it. You know? It’s more do we have an idea that we’re passionate about. Because not everything needs to be a franchise."

Goddard said he wanted to recapture the magic of making the original "Clvoerfield" in any sequels.

"The first one had such a, it never felt like we were making a movie, it felt like we were in our garage getting away with one. And I think we want to get back to that, and if we don’t then we’re just not going to."

And seven years down the road, found footage isn't necessarily the exciting new sensation it was when "Cloverfield" debuted, something Goddard is very aware of.

"I think it’s important that we want it to feel special, whatever it is," he said. "We don’t just want to do the same old thing."
