Deryck Whibley: 'If I Have One Drink.... I Will Die'

The frontman says it's inspired him to get back to music

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley revealed he was hospitalized for a month due to alcoholism in a post he shared on his website on Friday, titled "Rock Bottom."

"The reason I got so sick is from all the hard boozing I've been doing over the years," he wrote. "It finally caught up to me."

Whibley, formerly married to Avril Lavigne, wrote that he was admitted to the hospital after collapsing and being found unconscious by his fiance. "My liver and kidneys collapsed on me. Needless to say it scared me straight," Whibley confessed. "I finally realized I can't drink anymore. If I have one drink, the doc's say I will die."

It was an apparent wake-up call for Whibley, who also revealed the experience has inspired him to get back to music. Sum 41's latest album, Screaming Bloody Murder, was released in 2011. "I already have a few song ideas for new songs. Soon it will be time to start making a new album and getting back to touring again."

He also shared a bit of hard-learned wisdom with his fans: "I’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly."

We hope the best for Deryck in his recovery.
