In Jurassic World, Movie Awards nominee Chris Pratt plays Owen Grady, a dinosaur expert who casually trains velociraptors for a living. Pratt is up for Best Male and Best Action Performances this year, but his real-life talents prove he's so much more than your standard protagonist hero.
Pratt, who is basically a giant, generous teddy bear in human form, can french braid hair, paint, dance -- the list goes on. Learn more about him below, then cast your vote for the 2016 Movie Awards by this Sunday, March 20.
French braiding hair
"This is a weird thing to brag about but I did that glorious french braid," Pratt captioned an Instagram photo of his wife, Anna Faris. Then he showed off his skills at 2014's Comic-Con, where he french-braided an intern's hair during an interview with ET.
"The sport of wrestling really changed my life for the better," Pratt, who wrestled for Lake Stevens High School in Washington, told The Seattle Times. When he was a senior, he placed fifth at the 1997 state competition. MTV's 2012 episode of True Life: On The Mat followed the sport at Pratt's alma mater.
In a 2015 interview with James Corden, Faris revealed that both she and Pratt have a thing for creepy, crawly things: "When Chris and I started dating, he invited me over to his apartment and he also had a dead bug collection. I started to cry! I’ve met the man of my dreams. We both have [a] dead bug collection."
Pratt's fascination with bugs expands to the living, too. The grasshopper pictured here is named Goliath, according to his Instagram caption. He also wrote an detailed story about Goliath's life.
Being your middle school crush
Just look at that face! Even at 13, Pratt was destined to become a heartthrob. He tweeted out this yearbook pic in response to a CNN report about how teens use social media.
Pratt has visited several children's hospitals in costume to cheer up the patients. In June 2015, he taught kids at Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana how to survive a dinosaur attack. He's also visited Christopher’s Haven in Boston, Children's Hospital of Orange County, and Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
Pratt was nominated for class clown in high school. Need I say more?
Becoming a meme
After Jurassic World came out, the Internet exploded with memes parodying Pratt's intense scene with a bunch of very hungry raptors.
Playing with Legos
Pratt responded to the viral meme with his own brilliant parody made out of Legos. He photographed his Lego self adventuring all over the world, actually.
After gaining and losing and gaining and losing weight again for various roles, Pratt told Men's Health U.K. that the extra pounds left him feeling "impotent, fatigued, and emotionally depressed."
"I saw Zero Dark Thirty and right after walking out I was like, 'I'm going to get in shape and I'm never going to be fat again,'" he vowed.
Going on Reddit
After a Reddit user joked that Pratt would do an AMA if a pic of his abs hit the front page, Pratt stepped up to the plate and fulfilled that promise.
Loving his wife
"Anna and I are meant to be together. Our relationship has made me believe in divine intervention and destiny," Pratt said in his AMA.
Being an awesome dad
Son Jack Pratt, now 3 years old, was born premature and spent time in the NICU after his birth. Pratt opened up about this experience at the March of Dimes Celebration of Babies in 2014.
"I’ve done all kinds of cool things as an actor — I’ve jumped out of helicopters and done some daring stunts and played baseball in a professional stadium, but none of it means anything compared to being somebody’s daddy," Pratt said. "I made promises in that moment about what kind of dad I wanted to be, and I just prayed that he’d live long enough that I could keep them."
"[F]or some odd reason the one memory that jumps to mind was how good of a moonwalker he was," Reddit user warped_and_bubbling, who went to high school with Pratt, wrote. "Seriously, we had one of those pep rally type assemblies once and in the course of one of the 'rah-rah'-type skits that he was involved in, a Michael Jackson song hit and he absolutely nailed it."
This story is loosely confirmed by a 2014 MTV News interview, where Pratt spoke to correspondent Josh Horowitz about dancing: "I kind of knew Michael Jackson, I did a Michael Jackson skit in high school where I did the whole dance to 'Thriller.' Maybe one day I'll show you.'"
Running in high heels
James Corden challenged Pratt to run in high heels, since his Jurassic World co-star Bryce Dallas Howard literally ran through the jungle in pumps for the movie. Because he's good at everything ever, Pratt succeeded.
Pratt painted this self-portrait when he was 19 and gifted it to his childhood friend Alex Petrakopoulos, who spoke to MTV News about their friendship. The two worked together at Petrakopoulos's family restaurant, Omega Pizza & Pasta, and later lived in Hawaii together.
"Me and Chris met back in the fourth grade," Petrakopoulos said. "He was quite an outstanding guy. The first day I met him, he was on top of the playground and in the middle of a huge fist fight. ... An older guy was picking on a whole bunch of people, and Chris went in there and stuck up for them and put himself on the line."
Washing dishes and delivering pizza
There are less exciting talents, sure, but Pratt worked as a dishwasher and pizza deliveryman for Omega in his teens. He even painted this Greek scene on the restaurant's wall. After moving to Hawaii, he waitressed at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. It was there he met actress Rae Dawn Chong, who gave him his start in the business. He remains humble through the fame, though.
"Every time he [Chris] comes to town, he’ll come and visit us at the restaurant," Petrakopoulos said. "There was one particular time ... Chris and his wife Anna Faris came walking in … me and my brother were so busy, the whole restaurant was jam-packed full. I looked right at [Chris] and said, ’Chris, you have to wash some dishes for me. I need pots, pans, plates, silverware, everything.’ ... He put on an apron ... He went straight to work."
When Jack Pratt got the chance to name a baby penguin at The Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, he affectionately dubbed it Eagle. The family announced their chosen name in the precious video above, and daddy Pratt spells it out to help young Jack with his reading and writing skills.
"[We] thought that a penguin which aspirations to fly might be really fun," Faris explained.
In a 2010 behind-the-scenes video of Parks and Recreation-era Pratt, he talked about the then-nonexistent Jurassic Park 4: "Man, I just got a text message from Steven Spielberg. ... I have no shame, as you know by the endless gift baskets. I’ll have to get back to you later about Jurassic Park 4."
Little did he know he'd go on to star in
Jurassic Park 4 Jurassic World.
At the Guy’s Choice Awards in 2015, MTV News's Josh Horowitz asked Pratt what his go-to "bro-greeting" was. His answer was beautifully simple -- "I have one bro-greeting, it's a straight-up handshake this way" -- and he executes a flawless handshake in the video above.
Pratt filmed an Egret eating a lizard while his kid stood next to him. That is all.
