The Cast Of 'Exodus' Unspools The Legend Of The Golden Thong

The underwear makes the man.

A costume can be a transformative thing. A mask can help a character disappear into a role like the Phantom in "The Phantom of the Opera," and no one will tell you that Gandalf's robes didn't help Ian McKellen slip into character on "The Lord of the Rings" movies.

For Joel Edgerton, when it came to playing Ramses, it was all about the golden thong.

At a press day for Ridley Scott's latest directorial effort, "Exodus: Gods and Kings," Edgerton, Christian Bale and Scott joked with MTV News about Edgerton's costume choices.

"I'm done talking about my golden thong," Edgerton laughed. "It's at the dry cleaners."

Christian Bale, who famously disappears into roles, had high praise for Edgerton's commitment to solid gold underthings.

"You hear about these impressive method actors that would wear like silk underwear or whatever underwear the character would wear and he was like that," Bale said. I thought that I take characters far, he takes it much further."

"He shaves everything and then insists on wearing gold against every part of his skin."

So why didn't Edgerton bring his very special underthings to share with MTV's viewers?

"Turn the cameras off and I'll show you something," he taunted.

Uh, thanks.

"Exodus: Gods and Kings" is in theaters now.
