Vin Diesel Says The Rock ‘Shined’ In 'Fast 8' — But The Rock Is Still Throwing Shade

The ‘Fast 8’ stars are sending mixed messages on social media

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but whoever said that was clearly not familiar with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Vin Diesel’s current situation. Though Johnson and Diesel, two of the most bankable action stars in Hollywood, reportedly hashed out their feud on the set of Fast 8, it looks like there are still some unresolved issues.

On Friday, Johnson took to Instagram to post a heartfelt message after wrapping principal photography on Fast 8, the upcoming eighth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise. The Rock was sure to shout out director F. Gary Gray for his “vision and execution,” specific cast members including “handsome sumbitch” Scott Eastwood and Natalie Emmanuel, and the “hard-working” crew.

Franchise star and executive producer Diesel was noticeably absent from Johnson’s list of thank-yous. Then again, given the tension between the two on the Fast 8 set, maybe it’s not so surprising after all.

Johnson and Diesel’s bad blood first became public when the former called out one of his male Fast 8 costars for being an unprofessional “candy ass” on set. It didn’t take long for TMZ to dig up the dirt and report that Johnson and Diesel had been at odds throughout the arduous production. The two reportedly had a meeting — “partly because tensions were running so high it was almost impossible to shoot scenes” — to try to resolve their issues, but according to reports, the effort was unsuccessful and Diesel quickly wrapped and left the set.

According to TMZ, Diesel, a producer on the film, often held up production and operated on his own schedule, forcing the crew to shift their start times and shoot schedules regularly. This seems to corroborate a 2015 report from The Hollywood Reporter that called Diesel “extraordinarily difficult” to work with. Needless to say, Diesel reportedly didn’t win over any of the crew on Fast 8. Johnson, on the other hand, couldn’t be more appreciative of the crew for their tireless efforts.

“A huge THANK YOU to our hard working production crew — the backbone of our business. Your kind words meant a lot to me last night — thank you!” he wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, Diesel had nothing but kind words to say about his Fast costar on Facebook Live. “The reason we brought Dwayne Johnson into Fast 5 was because of you!” he said. “There was a [fan] named Jan Kelly who said, ‘I would love to see you guys work together on screen.’ So we gave the role that was originally written for Tommy Lee Jones, we gave it to Dwayne and he shined in it.”

Hmmm.

Here’s hoping Johnson and Diesel can resolve their issues before the Fast 8 press tour begins in April, because these guys still have two more Fast films to shoot, and things are going to be super awkward. Then again, at least we’re ever closer to green-lighting The Unauthorized Fast & Furious Story on Lifetime.
