Mandy Moore Turned Her Divorce From Ryan Adams Into ‘Fuel’ For 'This Is Us'

'I think everything happens for a reason'

When singer-turned-actress Mandy Moore returns to the small screen this fall, she joins Gilmore Girls' Milo Ventimiglia in This Is Us. Moore stars as Rebecca, a new mother of triplets — except her third baby didn't make it. Last May, the series' trailer went viral for its emotional scenes.

In real life, Moore is also dealing with plenty of complex emotions. Her divorce from Ryan Adams was finalized in June, and she spoke about their split at the Television Critics Association tour on Tuesday night (August 2).

"It's tough. Life is not easy," she said. "I think it's been great to be able to take all of the chapters in my life and be able to pour it into a job like this because it all helps. It's all fuel."

The couple had been married for six years before their "respectful, amicable parting of ways."

"I think everything happens for a reason. I think I spent a good portion of the last years of my life really pouring all of my energy into my life and relationship, and now that that's sort of not part of my life anymore. It's just not a coincidence to me that things sort of opened back up, and I'm able to focus back on myself again."

Maybe you could channel those feelings into a new record, Mandy? Until then, This Is Us premieres September 20 on NBC.
