To this point, we’ve only seen the war of words between Joe Budden and Drake play out through Joey’s podcast, Drake’s onstage shots, and verses from each of the rappers. But it turns out there were more words exchanged behind the scenes — on social media.

“He sent me a very passive aggressive Insta DM,” Joe said of Drake, on Be Honest with Cari Champion. “I didn’t even know how to take it. I didn’t know how to take it. And then he continued to send them. And then I said, ‘Whoa, OK.’ And that’s why I say I couldn’t tell you that we’re cool today, because it sounded like a man who was very hurt and just didn’t want to talk to Joe or hear from Joe or just that relationship was over. I don’t know, I haven’t spoken to him, so I can’t even begin to even pretend to know where his brain is. I pray for him. I want him to be well. I want him to be successful. I want God to continue to be amazing to him. He just gotta know that he can’t rap with niggas like me.”

As for the contents of the DMs, Budden wouldn’t relay the messages verbatim, but he did explain the general contents of the messages.

“He started off with, ‘I would like to formally invite you to one of my four Madison Square Garden shows August 4. You and however many people you would like to bring,’” he said. “Then after that, it said, ‘And, I bet you can’t release 25 dis records between now and then.’ So then it was the laughing emoji. I use that emoji with my friends, so I don’t know if he’s laughing or joking at this point. And then he followed that with, ‘If you can, I will give you $10,000. LOL.’ And then it said, ‘Joey,’ with a bunch of exclamation points."

Budden wasn’t sure how to decipher the DM.

“I didn’t know how to take that,” he continued. “I didn’t know how to read that. That sounds like someone who’s a gentleman. That sounds like someone who isn’t really bothered by any of this. But it also sounds like who’s attempting to insult someone. It depends how you want to take it.”

Joe then says that he replied, “LOL, maybe not 25, but I bet you I can get close to 20.”
