Playlist: Underrated 1980s New Wave

Our favorite sophisti-pop, early alt rock, and art punk

We can thank the 1980s for a lot of cool stuff: Apple computers, early cell phones — and, of course, MTV. We can also thank the '80s for some less well-known things, especially when it comes to awesome, underrated music. There were art-pop groups in the form of Family Fodder and Crash Course in Science, and post-punk greats like The Au Pairs and Girls at Our Best! Bands like The Style Council, Haircut 100, and Scritti Politti merged jazz, pop, and funk music to forge their own subgenre of sophisti-pop. Groups like The Sea Urchins and Marine Girls cultivated a fuzzy indie-pop sound that paved the way for cult label Sarah Records. Here, the MTV News staff nerds out on our favorite underrated '80s jams — all of which, in our opinion, stand the test of time.
