Paul Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Facing Off for 'Ant-Man'

It may have taken Edgar Wright eight bleeding years to finish the script for "Ant-Man," but with pre-production stuffs for the next Marvel franchise-starter already going down in L.A. right now, there's just no time to waste on casting that eponymous bug dude hero already.

So, since he won't be waiting 'til "The World's End," wink wink nudge, Wright has reportedly selected himself a fine pair of thesps from the Hollywood colony to compete for the big, thoraxy part: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd.

If you're thinking "what the what?" in a squeaky Liz Lemon voice right about now, you're not alone, but as Variety reports, Wright's in the market for a smart alecky type rather than your traditional muscly hunkster. If you're at all familiar with Wright's film résumé, this'll make perfect sense.

So, for now then, JoGo and Pretty-Faced Pauly are said to be alone in the race but have still gotta go and woo the studio peeps and Edgar Wright again before a decision is made. Meanwhile, the possibility of a third candidate coming along is not off the table just yet (and it's wise to never count out Simon Pegg when it comes to an Edgar Wright movie, you guys).

Between them, though, who's best suited to suit up as the size-shifting superhero?

Well, Gordon-Levitt's got that whole "I was in 'The Dark Knight Rises'" thing going for himself ...

... and he's done his fair share of not-so-typical action pics ("Looper," "Inception") ...

... but on the other hand, almost no one can deliver hilarious self-deprecation the way Paul Rudd can ...

... and, um, he's pretty much just a stone cold fox, so we ladies could dig it ...

... and while he hasn't been much in with the action scene per se, we get the feeling there's more to him than meets the rom com.
