(Un)Shocking News: 'World War Z' Sequel Planned

Brad Pitt optioned the rights to the hit novel, produced the movie and lent his A-list star-power to it in the lead role. He stuck through it despite a difficult production that included multiple reshoots (including a new ending), multiple script rewrites and the overall difficulty of delivering a zombie movie with a PG-13 rating. The budget ballooned past a reported $200 million, but the movie still smashed "Man of Steel" for the  number two spot over the weekend with $66 million at the domestic box office. Which means now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount and Pitt are moving forward with a sequel.

What's particularly impressive about the "World War Z" debut is that it's the biggest opening weekend for an original live-action movie since "Avatar." (Which reminds us about another troubled production people doubted before it was released: "Titanic"). It was also the biggest debut for Pitt.

The original plan was for "World War Z" to be a trilogy, but all of those production problems seemed to put the kibosh on that. Pitt himself dropped sequel hints at the Moscow premiere, noting how much more stuff there is to mine from the original novel.

"The movie captured the public's imagination with something that is fresh and different," Paramount studio vice chairman Rob Moore said. "And certainly, Brad gave a superb performance."

Other than the "Ocean's 11" films, which were ensemble pictures, Pitt hasn't really been much of a sequel guy before now. Does this mean we may see "Fight Club 2" or a sequel to "Se7en" called... Um, "Ei8ht"?
