'Ted' Blows Past 'The Hangover's' Box Office Record

"Ted," the little R-rated comedy that could, hit another major box office milestone, passing "The Hangover" to become the highest grossing R-rated original comedy of all time with $469 million earned worldwide.

That's just enough to inch it past "The Hangover's" $467.5 million gross, but with four international releases still left on its schedule — including one major market in Japan — "Ted" could top out closer to $500 when all is said and done.

Of course, as with all such records there are some caveats, the big one being that this record does not include sequels; it will be up to "Ted 2" to have a shot at the whopping $581.5 million brought in by 'The Hangover Part II" last year. Plus, the record is for worldwide gross only, as "The Hangover's" $277.3 million domestically dwarfs "Ted's" $218.5 million.

Still, the figures for "Ted" highlight the growing box office power of the R-rated comedy as well as the increasing influence of the international box office. And considering "Ted" was made for a mere $50 million, chances are that Seth MacFarlane and Universal Studios aren't worried too much about any asterisks you might want to attach to their records.

After all, nearly $500 million can buy a whole lot of white-out.
