NBC Is Developing Another Singing Show

Hey, here’s a great new idea in television: a singing show! Why has no one ever thought of this before?

Really, people. After “American Idol,” “The X Factor,” “The Voice,” “The Sing-Off,” and “Duets,” you wouldn’t assume there was room for yet another musical competition, but NBC is betting this assumption is incorrect. The Peacock is developing a series to be called “The Winner Is,” possibly for airing in the winter of 2013 between seasons of “The Voice.” Veteran reality producer John de Mol, who helped bring “The Voice” to the U.S. from his native Netherlands, is behind the new series.

What’s the twist that will set this show apart from the zillions of similar concepts? The singers – people of all ages, and groups as well as solo artists – will compete head-to-head in different rounds, and will be judged by a panel that includes celebrities. The catch is that after every round, the singers will have a chance to drop out in exchange for a set amount of cash – an offer that might be tempting if they are fairly certain they didn’t perform well enough to get voted through. In the final episode, eight acts will compete, and the two finalists will have the option of dropping out for $100,000, or taking their chances at a $1 million first prize.

The idea here seems to be to take the part of “The Voice” people like the least, the battle rounds, and expand them into their own show. And NBC is taking a big enough risk running “The Voice” twice a year – now they’re going to fill the interim with another singathon? We’ll keep an eye on it, but without high hopes.
