‘Chernobyl Diaries’ Sparks Outrage from Victim Support Group

Horror films are so hot right now—but not everyone's a fan of the latest Jesse McCartney vehicle, "Chernobyl Diaries," in which several victims who were mutilated by the blast hunt down unsuspecting tourists. The Friends of Chernobyl Centers U.S., a Chernobyl recovery organization, is taking this horror flick to task for its Hollywood treatment of a real-life disaster.

In case you slept through world history, Chernobyl refers to a truly horrific event in which scores of people were killed and even more disfigured when a nuclear power plant exploded in Ukraine back in 1986.

"It is terrible that such a tragic event as Chernobyl is being sensationalized in a Hollywood horror film," a rep for the organization told TMZ.

"Thousands of people have died and over 400,000 people were evacuated from their homes. Today, over 5 million people still live on contaminated land. The horror is not mutants running around; the real horror is the effect that Chernobyl continues to have on the lives of millions who have been devastated physically, emotionally and economically."

OK, well, we can't argue with that. But still, we might see it anyway. It is Jesse McCartney after all, and a decidedly different take on horror.

"If you do feel compelled to go see this movie, take the adrenalin you get from the horror to go do something good and make a difference in the lives of those living with Chernobyl every day," the rep adds.

Hopefully some of us will do that, but movies aren't always effective at generating change.

Either way, "Chernobyl Diaries" blasts into theaters May 25th.
