The Heatwave's "Carnival Bashment"

While many folks will look for that last relaxing summer breeze this weekend, Labor Day weekend in New York is the celebration of Carnival via the West Indian Day Parade. The festival's meaning varies depending on where you are in the world and New Yorkers approach the weekend as a way to celebrate Caribbean culture as a whole. On Labor Day, close to four million people gather to indulge in live music, gorgeous costumes, street-lined dance parties, local food carts, and to walk in the parade itself.

In the spirit of Carnival, we present London-based collective The Heatwave's annual "Carnival Bashment" mix. The group's ultimate aim is to show how dancehall is the root of jungle, garage, grime, dubstep, and funky, and it's a goal they achieve trough their weekly show on London's popular community radio station Rinse FM. Here, however, we hear a more straight-forward mix of dancehall, reggae, soca, affiliated pop, and even a few of their own productions. If anything, their mission statement is best showcased through their refix of the Jamie XX remix of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." The track overlays vocals by dancehall artists Mr. Lexx, Cecile, and Timberlee, transforming it a song that's just as good for a raging dancehall fete as it is a rave den. No matter how you choose to celebrate your Labor Day weekend, we recommend that this mix make an appearance. [Download here.]
