Students Prohibited From Performing 'Satanic' Fleetwood Mac Song
The graduating class of Huntsville High School in Alabama was told that they could not perform the Fleetwood Mac ballad "Landslide" at a baccalaureate program in a church last Sunday because the minister believed that the band's music was "satanic." Minister Barney Heyward of the Southwood Presbyterian Church declined to make a statement on the subject, but student Emily MacDowell told the Associated Press that the minister said "the leader of Fleetwood Mac is a witch and a Satan worshipper," a belief that led to a last-minute cancellation of the planned performance. Heyward seemingly was referring to Mac singer Stevie Nicks' stage persona of "Rhiannon," a mythological Welsh witch. A spokesperson for the church, who would not reveal her name, said no song was performed in its place.
