Black Star Release 'Fix Up,' Announce Aretha Franklin Mixtape

Underground legends Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) made their debut as the duo Black Star with their 1998 album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star. Since then, fans have been waiting for album number two, and that time is finally nearing. Last month Black Star premiered their new single “Fix Up” on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, and on Friday (November 25) they officially released the track for consumption.

The two New York rappers have dubbed today #BlackStarFriday on Twitter, in celebration of their new release. The hazy and soulful “Fix Up” features production from crate digging virtuoso Madlib–and it appears that fans are excited about Black Star’s reunion.

Mos Def–pardon us–Yasiin Bey, opens up the track strong, spitting, “I resolve, me and mine involved/A lot of cats talk live, they ain’t live at all/Sideline check, hush when it’s time to ball/Said you was charged and all, I’m surprised at ya’ll.” Talib Kweli begins the second verse coolly, rapping “The wait is over, or is it overweight?/The game is bloated, there's no escape/ They substandard, we substantial/ We got the great names, they got the love handles,” before launching into a busier flow.

After dropping "Fix Up," Black Star also gave fans an additional treat on Blackstarhub.com, releasing another song that will appear on their upcoming mixtape. "If y'all good Black Star will release a free song off our top secret Aretha Franklin mixtape today [too]," Talib wrote to fans.

After both tracks were released, fans took to Twitter to weigh in on the duo’s latest musical offerings.

“So um… Black Star is back and Madlib is the greatest,” tweeted fan @Punchdouble. “Feel like a real #Blackstar fan! Bought the new single Fix Up by Yasiin Bey & Talib Kweli #blackstarfriday,” added an excited @MicKurb. User @TheSmoovOne chimed in with, “Black Star is back! That "Fix Up" track is straight BOSS! Y'all gotta check this joint out.”
