Here's Why People Think Missy Elliott's 'WTF' Is Calling Out Miley Cyrus

'Stickin' out your tongue girl' ... well, that does seem familiar.

Missy Elliott released "WTF (Where They From)," her first new music video in seven years, featuring Pharrell Williams on Thursday (Nov. 12), much to the delight of all of us who grew up fanning out trash-bags to emulate "The Rain" and just had to have that plush newsboy hat from "Work It."

And a lot has changed since 2008, when her last vid dropped, so there are some people who think Missy might be making a subtle statement about a certain controversial pop star who rose to fame during her hiatus -- namely, Miley Cyrus.

Because, for starters, the opening line of her hook is "The dance you doing is dumb."

Miley Cyrus Twerk

Miley Cyrus has become kinda synonymous with the advent of twerking, for better or for worse.

And add that to the tongue thing.

The third and fourth lines in Missy's "WTF" are "Stickin' out your tongue girl/But you know you're too young." And if there's one thing Miley's more well-known for her than her signature dance move, it's her constant tongue-wagging.

Slate adds that there might be a layer of cultural appropriation bite-back involved in the song as well, which might speak to Miley's statements to The New York Times about Nicki Minaj.

One thing we can all agree upon is this: The new Missy track is slick and stylish and all the things that made Missy slay back in the day (and now too, yay!).
