12 Anthemic Lyrics From 5SOS’ 'Sounds Good Feels Good' That Just *Get* You

The guys' new album proves they really are the 'voice of a new generation.'

All over the world today, there are millions of music lovers who feel a little less alone.

That’s because 5 Seconds of Summer released their sophomore album, Sounds Good Feels Good, giving old fans and new fans alike a collection of relatable, triumphant and heartbreaking songs to pore over. These are tracks that get to the heart of the Aussie band’s “new broken scene” — meaning they’re here to tell you it’s OK to be a misfit, it’s OK to challenge the status quo, and you don’t have to go through anything alone.

On “Permanent Vacation,” 5SOS dub themselves the “voice of a new generation,” and these 12 SGFG lyrics illustrate that perfectly.

“She’s Kinda Hot”

“When you’ve got bigger plans that no one else understands, you’ve got a shot though”

It’s OK to be a misfit. It’s OK to do things your own way. Following your passion — whatever it may be — isn’t something to be ashamed of.

“They say we’re losers and we’re alright with that/ We are the leaders of the not coming backs/ But we’re alright though, yeah we’re alright though/ We are the kings and the queens of the new broken scene/ Yeah we’re alright though”

Yep, this song’s entire chorus is like 5SOS’ mission statement: We’re all a little screwed up, but we’re all going to be OK. Na na na na na na na na na na na!

“Hey Everybody!”

“Hey everybody, we don’t have to live this way/ We can all get some, yeah, we can all get paid”

Try to resist shouting along to this chorus, I dare you. This track chronicles a universal headache that so many of us will face at one point or another: money is an effin’ problem. But even when you’re feeling down and out about your empty pockets, just listen to 5SOS tell you you’re going to be fine because you can do something about it.

“Permanent Vacation”

“Hey I’m doing fine/ And I know I’m out of line/ So let’s sing this one more time”

This is the kind of lyric adults might roll their eyes at, but it carries such a strong spirit of rebellion that’s too perfect to resist. Having a “normal,” conventional life is totally fine — it works for some people, and that’s great. But others need to live more freely and recklessly. That’s what 5SOS are doing, and guess what? They’re fine.

“Congratulations, your imitations/ Are taking over the radio stations/ Corporations, calculations/ We’re the voice of the new generation”

These dudes are doing their part to bring punk back to the airwaves, bless their (jet black) hearts. As they’ve said before, they’re one of the only bands writing about “real sh-t” these days, which truly makes them the voice of this new generation.

“Jet Black Heart”

“The blood in my veins is made up of mistakes/ Let’s forget who we are and dive into the dark/ As we burst into color, we turn into life”

5SOS are owning up to their mistakes, but also acknowledging that it’s only after we let go of our regrets that we can feel alive again. And it’s never too late to change!

“Safety Pin”

“Runaways, we’re the long lost children/ Running to the edge of the world/ Everybody wants to throw us away/ Broken boy meets broken girl”

This lyric talks about the people of “the new broken scene.” They’re the rejects and misfits of the world; the ones who band together when they’ve been shut out elsewhere. If that sounds like you, 5SOS want you to know you’re not alone — there are plenty of other people who feel the same way you do.

“We’ll safety pin the pieces of our broken hearts back together/ Patching up all the holes until we both feel much better”

When you find someone who’s “broken” like you, you can help make each other better and give each other the love you both need and deserve.

“Raise ourselves to the middle finger/ Cause they all think we’re twisted”

Being a misfit doesn’t mean you’re messed up! Ignore anyone who tries to say otherwise.

“I see the best of times in front of me/ Now I’m off to paradise, swore I’ll never fight/ Say goodbye to pain and misery”

This standout song is so full of hope and optimism, urging you to carpe f—kin’ diem. You don’t have to take it too literally — sure, you could actually “fly away” to some tropical paradise, but it works just as well if you simply abandon the people or the habits that have been holding you back, and start fresh. Because you know what? The best is yet to come.

— Michael Clifford (@Michael5SOS) October 20, 2015

“Most of my life, I sat on my hands, I don’t make a sound/ Getting it right, I made all my plans/ Lost, never found”

This one’s for the introverts of the world who are swimming in self-doubt and struggling to define themselves, but dream of one day finally finding their place.

“I’m not gonna say that I’m sorry, gonna see the end of this story/ I won’t fade into darkness”

The song reaches its climax when Michael triumphantly declares he’s not afraid to express himself anymore because — as he sings in the chorus — he’s got “something to prove, nothing to lose.”
