Last year, 5 Seconds of Summer released a version of The Romantics’ “What I Like About You” that became a fan-fave track off their live album, received strong radio play and even earned them a Radio Disney Music Award and a Teen Choice Award nomination.
So in case 5SOS are on the lookout for another classic tune to put their own amazing spin on, we think think they’ve now found the perfect one: Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me.”
Yes, yes, we know… everyone supposedly hates Nickelback (or at least claims to — no judgment if “Photograph” is your secret go-to shower song). But let’s examine the evidence here.
On Monday (Oct. 12), the Aussies dropped by English radio station Capital FM to promote their upcoming album Sounds Good Feels Good. There, they participated in the station’s crazy-fun Instaoke challenge, where they sang three summer hits picked at random.
First up, the guys (kinda sorta) put their own seductive spin on Selena Gomez’s “Good For You,” commenting on the “raunchy” lyrics and giving their best breathy impressions of Sel’s voice. Next, they tackled Chris Brown’s “Loyal” to equally hilarious results, with Luke Hemmings channeling his inner rapper (sorry, but you’re not fooling anyone with that, dude!).
And then, it happened: the guys worked their mysterious wonders and somehow accomplished the feat of a lifetime: making a Nickelback song sound totally palatable. While Michael Clifford needed the lyric sheet for both “Good for You” and “Loyal,” he waved the paper away for “How You Remind Me,” proving he’s an unashamed Nickelback stan. The guys got super into the song, even after they were told time was up, so clearly this one’s a 5SOS tour bus fave.
Watch the hilarity ensue below, and don’t be embarrassed to sing along… we know you know the words: “ARE WE HAVING FUN YET?!”
