CHVRCHES Give 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' A Synth-Pop Update For The 'Vampire Academy' Soundtrack

CHVRCHES' Bauhaus cover gives us life! Er, death?

Unrelated, but related: In ninth grade, I had this poster of Siouxsie Sioux, aka Siouxsie And The Banshees' frontwoman, staring down at me from my headboard. Given that startlingly pretentious anecdote, I think you can see why I'm beyond into CHVRCHES' cover of Bauhaus' '80s goth-rock classic, "Bela Lugosi's Dead."

A cleanly electrofied synth-pop take on the original's gloomy, amplified haze, CHVRCHES' rendition is nonetheless SPOT ON. Aside from the nerve-wracking plinking and escalating tension of the instrumental, Lauren Mayberry's Glaswegian accent is the perfect fit for lyrics like: "Bereft in deathly bloom/ Alone in a darkened room." #obsessed

But, why did the Scottish trio delve into the post-punk classic -- other than, um, why not? Turns out, the track is going to be included on Vampire Academy: Music From The Motion Picture (out Feb. 4). If our extensive vampirical research (i.e., 1,377 viewings of "Nosferatu" circa age 14) can tell us anything, CHVRCHES' cover is exactly the kind of gloom-pop this film needs.
