Chvrches Made Justin Bieber’s ‘What Do You Mean?’ Even More Addictive

Watch the synth-pop trio turn JB's jam into a dance floor-ready banger.

When Scottish synth-pop trio Chvrches visited BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge on Wednesday morning (Sept. 23), they said something many music fans have been thinking lately: Justin Bieber has really, really, stepped up his game.

“Honestly after those two tunes [‘Where Are U Now’ and ‘What Do You Mean?’] I had a sit-down and thought, ‘Oh my god, I’m actually a Justin Bieber fan. How did this happen?’” Martin Doherty said.

And we get it — until just recently, JB’s fan base comprised mostly young girls, and he was all but shut out of “serious” music conversation. But, as Doherty points out, Bieber’s most recent tunes have proven his “comeback” of sorts is launching him into new, chart-topping territory and converting plenty of new fans along the way.

Among the new crop of Beliebers are Chvrches, who treated Live Lounge listeners to a dance floor-ready rendition of Bieber’s latest single, “What Do You Mean?” The trio — who are well-versed in killer covers — turned JB’s arrangement up a couple notches by laying on thicker, bombastic synths, giving it an ‘80s-sounding vibe that lends itself particularly well to Lauren Mayberry’s soaring vocals.

Chvrches are gearing up to release their sophomore album, Every Open Eye, which drops Friday. Meanwhile, Bieber’s new, as-yet-untitled album drops Nov. 13.
