John Green Is Using His Birthday To Decrease Worldsuck And You Can Too

Birthdays: He's doing them right.

While most of us use our birthdays as an excuse to make our friends do karaoke or pay for dinner, John Green is using his to literally save lives. In honor of his 38th year of being alive, Green is encouraging his Internet fans and friends to donate to Water.org by matching each donation out of his own pocket -- dollar for dollar.

The "Paper Towns" author has worked with Water.org for a few years now, to help the group fund sustainable, longterm solutions to the global water crisis that affects millions (yes, millions) of people around the world.

On each continent, there's a crazy number of people (think one in nine) who don't have access to clean, drinkable water or sanitation methods. Water.org reports that this lack of access kills children "at a rate equivalent of a jumbo jet crashing every ten hours" -- which is absolutely horrifying to think about.

Green and his brother, Hank, have been using their births as a reason to do some good for years now -- and it never ceases to give us the warm and fuzzies. This celebration is already off to a great start, reaching almost half the target goal in just a few hours.

Let's all kick some water crisis ass today in honor of our favorite author.
