6 Albums From 10 Years Ago That Perfectly Capture The State Of Pop In 2005

A look back at the albums released this week 10 years ago.

2005 was a heck of a year: The New England Patriots beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX, Hurricane Katrina pummeled New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and YouTube hit the web, taking the difficulty out of sharing cat videos. The world was a changed place.

Music was no exception. The landscape of pop was a bit different back in 2005, but not as far removed as one might think. Here are six albums that were released a decade ago this week.

Aly & AJ – Into The Rush

Just one year before their Disney Channel hit film "Cow Belles," Aly & AJ Michalka's inaugural album Into the Rush debuted at No. 36 on the Billboard charts. With tunes like "No One," which was featured in Disney's "Ice Princess," and the girls' rendition of the Lovin' Spoonful's "Do You Believe In Magic" it's hard to resist the sweet, teenage emotion perfectly captured in the Disney darlings' songs.

Hilary Duff – Most Wanted

Let's be clear – there is nothing "yesterday" about Hilary Duff. The world loved her then and the world loves her still. Our Lizzy McGuire is all grown up and her music has evolved along with her. But can we talk about that music video? THAT is so yesterday.

Thirty Seconds To Mars – A Beautiful Lie

Pre-Joker, Post-Jordan Catalano Jared Leto had a little band with his brother Shannon called Thirty Seconds To Mars. Their sophomore effort, A Beautiful Lie did O.K., receiving generally favorable reviews and even a few award nominations. But we all know what really makes this worth remembering. That eyeliner! That angst! How very 2005.

The Click Five – Greetings From Imrie House

Thank you, the Click Five. Listening to this song ten years later is as much fun as it was in 2005. "Just The Girl" was the first single from the Click Five's debut Greetings From Imrie House, a nod to the house where the band lived in Boston as they recorded the album and attended Berklee School of Music. Impressive, boys. The band split up in 2013, but we'll always have the summer of '05 to remember... sigh.

311 – Don't Tread On Me

Reggae beat? Check. Unavailing lyrics about a canoe? Check. The inexorable need to bob your head? Check. Must be a 311 album from the mid-aughts. It's hard to tell, though, because their style has remained as constant as their loyal fan base from their first major record in '93 through to 2014's Stereolithic. We'd say "never change," but something tells us 311 and their decade-spanning sound is here to stay.

Brad Paisley – Time Well Wasted

Sure, country music has changed a lot in the past decade, but some country is timeless. Like Brad Paisley's "Alcohol," the first single from his fourth album. You can still hear the faint echo of those cheeky, cautionary lyrics drifting through the saloon doors of cowboy-themed bars across the country. Put on your stetson, kick up your spurs and lean back while you listen.
