Andreja Pejić’s success has opened new doors for transgender models (and gotten her on-stage with Taylor Swift), though trans models still find themselves facing stigma in the modeling world. But, as The Advocate reports, Apple Model Management is opening an all-trans modeling agency in L.A.
This is something that has been years in the making. The Apple Model Management originally formed in Thailand and made a point of hiring both cisgender and transgender models.
“Thailand has been hosting the famous 'Miss International Queen' transgender competition for contestants from all over the world for the past 10 years and has been known in its openness to the gay and transgender community,” their website explains. “As a result, Apple Model Management has opened the first of its kind, full transgender model division, with the goal of giving transgender models an international stage to work worldwide and to globally represent Thailand and South East Asia.”
But the L.A. office is only interested in transgender models, and in fact has put out a hiring call.
“Our strong commitment to developing [transgender models] as successful models is never about quantifying or qualifying their gender,” explained Cecilio Asuncion, director of the Los Angeles agency. “It's never a question of if they are women or men, it's about their passion and commitment to being the best possible models they can be.”
Asuncion said that the full potential of trans models hasn’t been reached and that “this has to change." He’s already working on it.
