Troy Ave's 'Major Without A Deal' Proves You Don't Need A Record Deal
Troy Ave is a self-starter. It's a trait that the Brooklyn, New York MC prides himself on, and with his sophomore album, Major Without a Deal, Ave celebrates his independence in a real way.
The LP, which was released on Friday, Jun. 5 on Troy's own BSB Records, has major moments. New York rap architects Diddy, Cam'ron, Fat Joe and 50 Cent all appear. With Fif, Ave links with one of his biggest hip-hop influences for the street-flavored "Bang Bang."
Then on "Do Betta," Ave remixes his 2013 relationship track, this time recruiting Ty Dolla $ign to sing the hook that Troy wrote. And "Doo Doo" has already made it's mark on radio across the country.
While the rising rap star has built a strong underground following, there are plenty who are unfamiliar. So if you're just getting acquainted, here are five tracks from Troy Ave's Major Without a Deal that you shouldn't miss.
"Doo Doo"
Not only is "Doo Doo" MWAD's catchiest single, the anti-hater ode is also MTV's Jam of the Week.
"Bang Bang"
Ave has drawn plenty of comparisons to the G-Unit juggernaut on his come-up, and now on "Bang Bang," Fif links with Troy for the Yankee-produced collaboration that fans have been waiting for.
"Do Betta"
Longtime Ave fans will remember this standout from Troy's White Christmas 2 mixtape. This new version gets a boost from the hottest hookman in the game today, Ty Dolla $ign.
"Do Me No Favors"
Back when few took notice of Troy's talent, Brooklyn rap vet Fabolous took Ave under his wing and showed him the ropes in rap -- they collabed on "Merlot Part Deux" and "Only Life I Know" back in 2012. So it's great to hear Fab and Ave hook-up with Jadakiss for this one. Loso spazzed on that last verse.
"All About the Money (Remix)"
Getting Rick Ross and Jeezy on a track isn't easy for MCs with major label backing, so to pull this track off independently says a lot about Ave's hustle and talent.
