Someone Just Discovered An Iconic Lost Prop From ‘Wild’ In The Oregon Wilderness

It had been perched aside a cliff for two years.

Remember that time when – in the opening scene of "Wild"Reese Witherspoon threw her boot off a mountain in a fit of frustration?

Well, despite adhering to "leave no trace" practices during the 2013 film shoot, the crew of the movie was never able to recover the custom-made size 6 1/2 Danner boot, which was catapulted off the south side of Oregon's Mount Hood – so two intrepid hikers recently took it upon themselves to do so.

According to The Oregonian, avid hiker Chris Kesting saw the movie and said, "Hey, I know exactly where that is. One of these days it might be fun to go up there and see if that boot is actually there." He and friend Tim Pate ascended the mountain on March 8, and used landmarks to find the exact spot where Witherspoon threw the boot.

Kesting searched the cliffs for about 15 minutes before spotting something amiss – it turned out to be a Danner boot with red laces. He quickly deduced that it was most likely "that" boot. "You can tell the manufacturing date on it, 2013, so it's relatively new, but you could tell it had been sitting out in the sun for quite a bit of time," he told The Oregonian. "It was bleached out and had been sitting in that spot for awhile."

The boot now holds a place of honor on a bookshelf in Kesting's home, and author Cheryl Strayed – who penned the memoir upon which the film is based, and who Witherspoon portrays in the film – got quite a kick out of it. "Reese is going to laugh when I tell her this story," she told one commenter on her Facebook page.
