Hugh Jackman's days as Wolverine, like the character himself, are seemingly endless. The Australian actor first came to fame by playing the adamantium-laced mutant in 2000's "X-Men," and has since played the character in every single one of the seven "X-Men" films, if only to show up to curse out his fellow mutants.

Will the streak continue when "X-Men: Apocalypse" hits theaters in two years? It's hard to say. For one, the film is said to focus on the "First Class" era of mutants — namely, Charles Xavier, Magneto and Mystique, as well as new recruits Cyclops and Jean Grey — as they battle it out with Apocalypse, the most ancient mutant of them all, played by Oscar Isaac. With so much business to attend to, is there even room for Hugh Jackman's claw-popping antihero?

Well… maybe there is. Jackman appeared on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast this week and opened up about the possibility of showing up in "Apocalypse," and based on how he answered the question, the outlook seems pretty good.

"I have been speaking to the guys, and I'm not at liberty to tell exactly what's going on," he said, "which is largely framing my answer here."

"But there's still a lot unknown about that, actually," he continued. "There are some very exciting things about integrating the whole X-Men world, including the Wolverine movie. There's some really cool things going on."

Indeed, there are some interesting wheels in motion on the "X-Men" front. Not only is "Apocalypse" in the near future, but the Ryan Reynolds-starring "Deadpool" is finally on the way, targeting a February 2016 release date. There are rumblings that Fox's "X-Men" and "Fantastic Four" franchises could cross over, too, but that's nothing more than rumor for now.

Beyond that, there's another planned Wolverine solo movie in the works, the third of its kind following the poorly received "X-Men Origins" and the widely loved "The Wolverine." Who can say where the next film will fit on that spectrum, but for his part, Jackman says that he and writer David James Kelly are "working on it really hard."

"I'm very, very excited about that, actually," he said.
