The St. Louis Rams Who Put Their 'Hands Up' For Michael Brown Get Support From Killer Mike
Killer Mike has spoken out about Ferguson extensively on various platforms. But the rapper was nearly at a loss for words when he broke down last week after a grand jury decided not to indict Darren Wilson, the Missouri police officer who fatally shot unarmed teen Michael Brown in August.
In the wake of the controversial decision, Mike Bigga said he continues to support those taking a stand against the non-indictment. That includes Jared Cook, Kenny Britt, Stedman Bailey, Chris Givens and Tavon Austin, the St. Louis Rams football players who recently made a “hands up, don't shoot” demonstration in support of Brown.
"If those players wanted to walk out as conscientious objectors of the decision, I support that,” Killer Mike said in a new CNN interview, adding that he’s long supported athletes who’ve made political statements. That gesture put the St. Louis Rams and St. Louis Police Officers Association at odds, but Mike believes it's part of a long and necessary tradition.
"I believe that [Pro Football Hall of Famer and activist] Jim Brown was right," he continued. "I believe that all the athletes of the ‘60s was right. I believe that Muhammad Ali was right. I believe that Bill [Russell] was right. I believe that we need more athletes doing this today.”
The son of a former police officer -- who also has cousins in the force -- Mike also opened up to the cable network about his feelings following the grand jury ruling being made public on November 24.
The Run the Jewels MC was with his wife when he heard the news: "I just held her in my arms and I just cried.”
