But inevitably, those dreams end; the clock strikes midnight, and Cinderella is sent packing ... though as #MMM 2014 heads to the second round, it seems we may have finally found the band that can break that streak: 5 Seconds of Summer, the Australian quartet currently winning over the world — and various members of One Direction — with their radio-ready hooks and mag-approved looks.
They also brought that considerable momentum into #MMM, rolling over Queens of the Stone Age in round one; though if they want to move on to the Sweet 16, they've got to beat another formidable opponent, Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee, who's no stranger to tournament success.
Still, with an army of fans voting on their behalf, 5SOS look strong ... though, they're also remaining humble.
"We can't take on Amy Lee and Evanescence!" Michael Clifford laughed. "They 'bring me to life,' lift me up.' Well, we will try ... we are going to make a master plan of how to win, how to beat everyone. We're going to rally the troops."
As for any kind of scouting report on Amy, 5SOS have done their homework — "She's gorgeous," Ashton Irwin said — though, truthfully, they're still pretty amazed they managed to beat Queens of the Stone Age in the first round of the tournament. But that doesn't mean they're not already thinking ahead to a spot in the Sweet 16.
"I don't know if we can win, those are two incredible bands we're up against," Clifford said. "We're going to have to rely on our fans to help us win."
"We are going away right now, and we are going to forge a plan," Irwin added. "I'm sure we'll think of something."
