N.W.A. And Public Enemy Up For Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Induction

Two hip-hop acts will face off against heavyweights for a spot in the class of 2013.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is set make history in December when fans will be allowed to vote alongside industry luminaries for the inductees of the 2013 Class.

N.W.A. and Public Enemy are the only two hip-hop acts against other hopefuls Rush, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, [article id="1685321"]Donna Summer[/article], Chic, Albert King, Deep Purple, Kraftwerk, Heart, the Marvelettes, the Meters, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Procol Harum and Randy Newman.

N.W.A., the iconic Los Angeles rap group consisting of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, DJ Yella and fallen legend Eazy-E, got their start in the late 1980s and helped to lay the blueprint for gangster rap with classic singles like "F--- Tha Police" and "Straight Outta Compton." On the flipside, Public Enemy, consisting of rappers Chuck D. and Flavor Flav as well as Professor Griff, the S1Ws and Dj Terminator X, changed the course of rap with politically minded LPs like It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back and Fear of a Black Planet. If either group is inducted, they will join Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys as the only hip-hop acts in the HoF.

The 1970s German outfit Kraftwerk have hip-hop ties as well. The electronic group's 1977 track "Trans-Europe Express" was sampled on Afrika Bambaataa's 1982 ground-breaking rap record "Planet Rock."

Rock band Rush have been eligible for the Hall of Fame since 1988, but this is the first time that the Canadian rockers are on the ballot.

Fans have up until December 3 to cast their vote for the nominees they'd like to see inducted. Everyone can pick up to five acts, and the top five vote-getters make the fan's ballot, which will then be tallied with other votes to determine the Class of 2013. The inductee ceremony will be held on April 18, 2013 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.
