The news of Nick Lachey and former MTV "TRL" host Vanessa Minnillo's [article id="1651572"]engagement[/article] wasn't exactly a big surprise, given that the couple have been together since 2006.

What did come as a bit of an oddity was a report that Lachey's ex-wife, Jessica Simpson, was "deeply saddened" about the news.

"Even though Jessica wants to be happy for Nick, this is a very difficult time for her," a "friend" of Simpson's told Popeater's Rob Shuter. "Nick was the love of her life then, man, and he was her first, so she will always have a very special place in her heart for him. She's deeply saddened."

According to Simpson, however, that report couldn't be further from the truth.

"I don't know where all those rumors came from," Simpson

target="_blank">told Ryan Seacrest when she called into his radio show Thursday (November 11). "My mom actually called me and said that everyone was saying that I was 'saddened.' I was just in complete shock. I couldn't be more happy for Nick."

href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20434650,00.html" target="_blank">dating former NFL player Eric Johnson since May, added that she and Lachey are in a really good place these days, and she wishes people would move past the relationship, as she and Lachey both have.

"Our relationship was over a really long time ago, and it would be nice if everyone could move on with us and really just celebrate the love between him and Vanessa," she said. "I do, and I wish them nothing but the best."
