NBA superstar LeBron James received cheers from Miami Heat fans after he announced on live television Thursday night that he was joining the franchise as a free agent. But one person he hasn't won over with the move is Dan Gilbert, the majority owner of the ball player's previous team, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Gilbert blasted his former big ticket in an open letter issued to the media, calling the Ohio native narcissistic and cowardly. He guaranteed that the Cavs would win a championship before the much ballyhooed trio of James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, who also signed new deals to play for the Heat.
"As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier," Gilbert wrote. "This was announced with a several-day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his 'decision' unlike anything ever 'witnessed' in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.
"Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us," he added.
Gilbert lashed out at James for his "betrayal" and said his new franchise will pay for the star's actions. In fact, he predicted that James' departure would lift the "curse" that has supposedly prevented the Cavs from ever winning an NBA championship.
"The self-declared former 'King' will be taking the 'curse' with him down South," Gilbert prophesied. "And until he does 'right' by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma. Just watch."
