Over the past three films, countless comics, TV shows and other forms of popular culture, we've all gotten to know the mutant who calls himself Wolverine. But we've never seen him — or his friends — quite like this before.
In these five exclusive clips from the upcoming movie "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," the prequel gives us a good look at Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber), Gambit (Taylor Kitsch), Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), Wraith (Will.I.Am) — and of course, the big, bad tri-bladed guy himself (duh ... Hugh Jackman!).
"My whole life, I've felt like an animal — but I've ignored my instincts," Logan tells us in the clip focusing on his transformation into the ferocious master of all mutants. "I ignored what I really am. But that will never happen again." Riding on top of a helicopter, doing battle on a motorcycle and leaping off exploding vehicles, his razorblade claws have never seemed sharper.
In the John Wraith clip, we get our best look yet at the mysterious character sometimes called Kestrel in the Marvel Comics universe. "I've done some pretty awful things — the kind of things that haunt a man while he's sleeping," he explains. These things include being a powerful teleporter with an affinity for explosives.
The Sabretooth clip focuses on one of the best actors working in Hollywood today, Liev Schreiber, as he delves into the realm of comics for the first time in his impressive career. "I'm not your friend," the main villain in the film says, clearly delighting in the intense dialogue. "I'm an animal who dreamed he was a man. But the dream is over, and the beast is awake."
The Gambit clip finally gives us an extended peek at the one "X-Men" character that fans have been clamoring to see in the film series more than any other. "If I've learned anything about life, it's this: Always play the hand you're dealt," he says. The Louisiana-born, kinetic-energy-manipulating mutant — whose trademark weapon is a deck of deadly playing cards — continues, "My name is Gambit, and I play for keeps."
Finally, we get a good look at Mr. Wade Wilson, better known as Deadpool. "Origins" star Ryan Reynolds has made no secret about his desire to spin the trash-talking character into his own series and, judging by this clip, he seems likely to be one of the film's breakouts. "All I ever wanted was to travel to far-off, exotic places and meet new, exciting people — and then kill them," he explains. "So I became a mercenary."
You can take the introductions to the next step soon enough, when "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" hits theaters everywhere May 1.
