'Slumdog Millionaire' Wins Big At Star-Studded Critics' Choice Awards

Sean Penn, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Heath Ledger also take home trophies.

SANTA MONICA, California -- From [movieperson id="50260"]Brad[/movieperson] and [movieperson id="31834"]Angelina[/movieperson] to

[movieperson id="78111"]Clint[/movieperson] and [artist id="1184"]Common[/artist], Thursday night's 14th annual Critics' Choice Awards were dominated by stars who needed only one name to set flashbulbs popping.

"Holy sh--!" [artist id="1962774"]Katy Perry[/artist] exclaimed to MTV News on the red carpet, clearly overwhelmed as she looked around the star-packed crowd at the Santa Monica Civics Center. "These people are all beautiful, and I want to know their secrets."

Amid all the glitz and glamour, once the ceremony began, the night was all about a rags-to-riches story come to life for [movieperson id="157114"]Danny Boyle[/movieperson]'s crowd-pleasing [movie id="364450"]"Slumdog Millionaire."[/movie] Taking home five awards (including Best Film, Best Director and Best Composer for A.R. Rahman, who we spoke with recently), the Fox Searchlight flick continued to gain momentum for its practically inevitable Oscar run.

The acting categories went largely to assumed favorites. [movieperson id="93819"]Sean Penn[/movieperson] took home two prizes, Best Actor and Best Ensemble, for [movie id="374161"]"Milk."[/movie] [movieperson id="233661"]Heath Ledger[/movieperson] was posthumously recognized for his chilling turn in [movie id="306605"]"The Dark Knight."[/movie] And there was a [movie id="285454"]"The Devil Wears Prada"[/movie] reunion of sorts when [movieperson id="257378"]Anne Hathaway[/movieperson] and [movieperson id="60497"]Meryl Streep[/movieperson] tied for the Best Actress trophy thanks to their respective work in [movie id="360881"]"Rachel Getting Married"[/movie] and [movie id="345180"]"Doubt."[/movie]

Even though they didn't receive the love of the Critics' Choice in the end, the biggest superstar couple of the night, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, were very much on the brain for virtually every other actor in attendance.

[movie id="351190"]"Forgetting Sarah Marshall"[/movie] star [movieperson id="208052"]Jason Segel[/movieperson] tried to play it cool. "Brad Pitt and Angelina showed up, and you think you don't care," he told MTV News. "But you totally care! You get a tingle."

[movie id="338328"]"High School Musical"[/movie] star [movieperson id="318951"]Corbin Bleu[/movieperson] was up-front about why he was there (besides the chance to present alongside [movieperson id="268122"]Amanda Bynes[/movieperson]). "I'm looking for Angelina," he said. "I haven't seen her yet!" When asked if her significant other, Mr. Benjamin Button Pitt would object to his obsession, Bleu insisted, "She's here with me. He's cool with it."

While much of the night was about revealing the films of 2008, musician-turned-actor Common had one big '09 film on the brain: [movie id="347265"]"Terminator Salvation."[/movie] Sporting a big smile about the action figure of himself he had just seen, he openly campaigned for a spot in the fifth "Terminator." "I know they're talking sequel. Let's hope they keep [my character] in the mix there. They need that energy."
