Van Morrison Won't Play Inaugural Gala

Rock/soul legend never intended to perform at Thursday event, despite indications from Bush committee that he would.

Irish rock and soul legend Van Morrison will not perform at George W. Bush's inaugural festivities on Thursday, despite indications from the Bush Presidential Inaugural Committee that he had been on the schedule.

Morrison never had any intention of playing the Celebration of America's Spirit Together gala, his label, Virgin Records, said in a statement.

The inauguration committee could not be reached for comment on Wednesday (January 17). A week ago, a spokesperson for the committee confirmed a lineup for the event, reported by the Associated Press, that included Morrison.

Ricky Martin, Jessica Simpson and country duo Brooks & Dunn are scheduled to perform at the party at the Lincoln Memorial, along with Wayne Newton, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charlotte Church.
