DMX Slides Down Harlem Hospital's Chimney

Rapper plays Santa Claus for young patients with gift certificates for toys plus TV, stereo for pediatric ward.

Children at New York's Harlem Hospital will have a Ruff Ryders Christmas this year, thanks to the efforts of rapper-turned-Santa DMX.

The rapper visited the hospital's pediatric ward Wednesday afternoon with his wife, Tashera Simmons, where they ate lunch with young patients and gave them gifts.

"He ate with the kids, he laughed with them — I guess they're familiar with him and his music," a Harlem Hospital spokesperson said. "It was a good thing to see the children and cheer them up, because many of them have to spend the holidays here."

DMX gave 50 children Toys "R" Us gift certificates, and he also bought a new television and stereo system for the pediatric ward's playroom, according to the spokesperson.

DMX, who recently saved a community church from eviction in Yonkers, New York, and is helping to build a shelter for pregnant teenagers, recently said he hopes the public will become more aware of his charitable efforts, instead of focusing on his occasional problems with the law.

"Anytime I get arrested, it's on the news, primetime, one of the headline stories, but they never say when rapper DMX gets off the hook. When charges get dropped, when DNA says that can't be true. If they would even out the news, our perception of the world wouldn't be so bad," he said.
